Five Bothwell farmers buy second-hand fire engines, TFS applauds their 'fire-ready' initiative

Edith Bevan, ABC NEWS Hobart 6 March 2017

The tiny Tasmanian town of Bothwell is home to about 400 people, and five privately owned fire trucks.

The properties surrounding Bothwell, each spanning thousands of acres, are famed for producing good sheep and fine wool.

But the Central Highlands town can now also boast being one of the most fire ready in the world after five farmers acted independently on the same idea — to buy their very own fire engine.

The five trucks were auctioned off by the Tasmania Fire Service (TFS) last year, and none of the farmers knew of the other's plans before they snapped up the big red engines.

While the district also already has its own TFS brigade with three trucks manned by volunteers, the threat of large-scale blazes justified having extra engines on hand.
