Participants needed for bushfire community preparation survey

Participants are needed to take part in an online survey of community bushfire preparation and response in Tasmania.

The research, undertaken by the Bushfire and Natural Hazards Cooperative Research Centre and CQUniversity, aims to improve community bushfire safety in Tasmania by collating the views and decisions of households living in areas at risk of bushfire.

Researcher Dr Lisel O’Dwyer said when a bushfire occurs it is important to learn as much as possible from people’s experiences.

“This research will help the emergency services develop better ways to improve community - safety for future bushfires. It also addresses the role of pets in bushfire preparation.

“The survey covers important topics such as bushfire survival plans, bushfire warnings, what affects your planning and response, and the status of pets (including horses) during a fire.

“We want to hear from your experiences - nothing beats hearing from people who have been through a bushfire but even if you haven’t, your input is also crucial,” Dr O’Dwyer said.

Please note that parts of the survey are quite detailed. Depending on your individual experiences and circumstances, it can take between five to 15 minutes to complete. The survey can be saved and finalised in multiple sessions, is anonymous, and has ethics clearance from CQUniversity.

The Tasmania Fire Service and RSPCA are partners in the research.
